ROAD TO 2032 & 2036 OLYMPICS

Pickleball's Olympic Bid for Brisbane

Pickleball’s potential inclusion in the Brisbane 2032 Olympics is a major topic of conversation within the sporting world, especially given the sport's explosive growth in Australia.

While not yet an official Olympic sport, here is the current outlook for 2032:

The Current Status

  • Not yet confirmed: As of early 2026, pickleball is not on the official Olympic program.
  • Decision Timeline: The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is expected to finalize the initial sports program for Brisbane later in 2026.
  • The "Host City" Wildcard: Under IOC rules, host cities can propose additional sports that are popular locally. Given that Australia has one of the fastest-growing pickleball communities outside the U.S., there is a strong push for the Brisbane organizing committee to nominate it.

Major Hurdles to Clear

For the IOC to grant pickleball "Olympic" status, the sport must meet several strict criteria:

  • Unified Governance: The IOC requires a single, recognized international federation. Currently, there are competing organizations (GPF, WPF, and IFP) working toward a unified front.
  • Global Reach: To be a full medal sport, it must be widely practiced in at least 75 countries across four continents (for men) and 40 countries across three continents (for women).
  • Anti-Doping Compliance: The sport must strictly adhere to the World Anti-Doping Code.

Realistic Scenarios for 2032

  • Demonstration Sport (Most Likely): Many experts believe pickleball’s best shot for 2032 is as a "demonstration" or exhibition sport. This would allow it to showcase its popularity and TV appeal without being a full medal event.
  • Full Medal Event (Long Shot): This would require rapid unification of governing bodies and official IOC recognition within the next year or two.

  • Targeting 2036: If 2032 comes too soon, 2036 is widely considered the most "realistic" target for full medal inclusion as the sport matures internationally.

As a club owner or coach, the "scouting window" for Brisbane 2032 is actually open right now. Here is why:

1. The "10-Year Rule" for Elite Performance

Athletes currently dominating the pro circuits (like Anna Leigh Waters, who became No. 1 in her mid-teens) often start as young as 10 to 12.

  • The Math: A 12-year-old today will be 18 in 2032—the prime age for the fast-twitch reflexes and recovery speed required in modern pro pickleball.
  • Skill Transfer: Clubs should be looking at "crossover" athletes—young tennis, table tennis, or badminton players who have the foundational hand-eye coordination but can be molded into pickleball-specific strategies early.

2. Host City Leverage (The "Skateboarding" Model)

Brisbane 2032 has the power to propose "additional sports" that reflect local culture. Australia's pickleball scene is currently exploding.

  • Precedent: Japan successfully pushed for Skateboarding and Surfing in Tokyo 2020 because they had a deep pool of young, local talent ready to win medals.
  • Club Strategy: If Australian clubs produce a "golden generation" of world-class teenagers in the next four years, it creates a massive incentive for the Brisbane Organizing Committee to include the sport to ensure home-grown medals.

3. The Professionalization of "Junior PPA"

The infrastructure for young talent already exists. As of 2026, rankings for Under-18 (U18) and even Under-12 (U12) divisions are becoming highly competitive.

  • Sponsorships: Brands are already signing "pro" contracts with 14-year-olds.
  • Collegiate Pipeline: Just as college tennis feeds the pros, collegiate pickleball is growing. Scouting young talent now ensures the club can place players into these high-performance pipelines.

4. Risk Mitigation

Even if the IOC delays full inclusion until 2036, scouting youth isn't a wasted effort.

  • Commercial Appeal: Younger players drive the "lifestyle" side of the sport, attracting younger members and higher-tier sponsors to the club.
  • Demonstration Status: Even as an "exhibition" sport in 2032, the players chosen to represent their countries will become the first true global faces of the sport.

  • THANK YOU
